If you can pipe a ball, you can pipe a whole family of snowmen. All you'll need is a round tip (I used a #12 for inch-high snowmen), stiff consistency royal icing in white and any colors you like for the accessories, a black food-safe marker or concentrated food color in black and round toothpicks for the features, a flower nail, parchment paper squares, a Styrofoam block to rest the nail in, a glue stick, and a dusting pouch filled with a 50/50 mix of powdered sugar and cornstarch. Start by sticking a parchment square to the flower nail with a dab from the glue stick.
Hold the tip just above and at a right angle to the surface and squeeze out a ball of icing. Stop pressure and pull the tip away straight up. Touch a fingertip to the dusting pouch and tap down the peak to round the icing into a ball. Allow it to firm up for a few minutes.Repeat the process to pipe the center ball of the body. Allow this to firm up for a few minutes as well.
One one of the snowmen I piped a scarf with a #101s petal tip.
On another I piped a few buttons with a #3 tip.
Pipe the head in the same way you did the other balls that make up the body.
When the icing is very firm, paint on some food coloring features with the blunted end of a round toothpick (I smash the tip into the counter to create a tiny rounded point).
